Africa Desperately Needs Mpox Vaccines: Why Donations from Rich Countries Won’t Solve This or the Next Health Emergency

mpox vaccines

The recent surge in mpox outbreaks across Africa has highlighted a significant global health crisis. While mpox vaccines have been instrumental in controlling outbreaks in wealthier nations, Africa faces a stark contrast—a lack of vaccines, limited healthcare infrastructure, and overwhelming demand. Despite donations from high-income countries, the solution to Africa’s mpox vaccine shortage lies far beyond temporary aid.

In this blog, we will explore why Africa urgently needs mpox vaccines, the global health emergency caused by the virus, and why vaccine donations alone won’t prevent future health crises.

Understanding Mpox and the Global Health Emergency

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, has become a growing public health concern, particularly in parts of Africa. While the virus has existed for decades, recent mutations have led to more severe outbreaks, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global health emergency. In 2024, Africa, particularly countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, saw an alarming rise in cases(Africa Science News).

The mpox outbreak in Africa is not only a localized crisis but also a global issue, as viruses don’t respect borders. The challenge lies in the mpox vaccine distribution in Africa, where healthcare systems are strained, and access to vaccines is limited.

The Critical Need for Mpox Vaccines in Africa

Despite rising cases, Africa has received a disproportionately low number of vaccines. Richer nations have been able to secure large stocks of mpox vaccines, leaving Africa reliant on donations. However, these mpox vaccine donations have proven to be insufficient. The continent continues to experience a vaccine shortage, with limited doses trickling in while demand far outstrips supply.

Mpox Vaccine Inequity: Why Donations Aren’t Enough

The inequity in global health responses has been a recurring theme throughout the pandemic era. The current mpox vaccine inequity highlights the broader systemic issues of unequal access to essential healthcare resources. Donations, though helpful, often come too late and are insufficient to meet the needs of African nations facing mpox outbreaks.

Africa’s mpox vaccine shortage is partly due to limited manufacturing capacity on the continent. Richer countries can produce or procure vaccines quickly, while African nations depend on global supply chains, which are often disrupted during crises. Addressing mpox vaccine inequity requires a more sustainable solution than sporadic donations(Africa Science News).

The Mpox Outbreak in Africa: A Closer Look at the Democratic Republic of Congo

One of the countries hardest hit by the mpox outbreak in Africa is the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The DRC has faced endemic levels of mpox for years, with repeated outbreaks affecting both rural and urban populations. Despite the DRC’s long history with the virus, vaccine access remains extremely limited, complicating efforts to contain the disease(Council on Foreign Relations).

In recent months, the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen new strains of mpox emerge, with higher fatality rates than previous strains. These strains have been especially deadly among vulnerable populations, such as those living with HIV/AIDS. The lack of mpox vaccines in these regions not only puts lives at risk but also poses a serious threat to neighboring countries, increasing the risk of cross-border transmission.

Challenges in Mpox Vaccine Distribution in Africa

The issue of mpox vaccine distribution in Africa is multifaceted. It is not only about securing more doses of vaccines but also about ensuring that vaccines reach the most vulnerable populations in a timely and efficient manner. Many African countries, including the DRC, lack the infrastructure to distribute and administer vaccines at the scale needed during an outbreak.

Factors Contributing to the Mpox Vaccine Shortage

  • Limited local manufacturing: Africa has limited capacity to produce vaccines domestically, relying heavily on international supply.
  • Healthcare infrastructure: Many African countries struggle with basic healthcare delivery systems, making vaccine distribution slow and inefficient.
  • Logistical challenges: Transporting and storing vaccines, especially in rural areas, poses significant logistical hurdles due to poor infrastructure and lack of cold-chain storage facilities.

These mpox vaccination challenges compound the difficulty of containing the virus. Without substantial improvements in Africa’s healthcare systems and vaccine supply chains, future outbreaks may prove even more difficult to manage.

A Comprehensive Approach to Public Health Crises

The current mpox public health crisis in Africa serves as a reminder that global health emergencies require more than just reactive measures. While mpox vaccine donations from high-income countries are important, they are not a sustainable solution. The crisis underscores the need for a more robust global health system that prioritizes equitable access to vaccines and treatments for all nations, regardless of their economic standing.

Long-Term Solutions for Africa’s Vaccine Needs

To address the mpox vaccine shortage and prevent future health crises, Africa must develop the capacity to produce its own vaccines and medical supplies. This includes investing in local manufacturing, training healthcare workers, and improving infrastructure to ensure that vaccines can be distributed swiftly and equitably during an outbreak.

Global organizations like the WHO and the International AIDS Society (IAS) have called for international cooperation to ensure that low-income countries like those in Africa have the resources and expertise to handle public health emergencies. Solutions may include establishing regional vaccine production hubs, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and sharing knowledge and technology(Africa Science News)(Council on Foreign Relations).

Looking Beyond Donations to Solve the Mpox Vaccine Crisis

Africa’s struggle with mpox outbreaks highlights the urgent need for a more comprehensive approach to vaccine distribution. While mpox vaccine donations have provided temporary relief, they do not address the root causes of the mpox vaccine inequity. Without stronger international cooperation, local vaccine production, and improved infrastructure, Africa will continue to face challenges in accessing vaccines—not just for mpox but for future health crises as well.

To truly solve this problem, the global community must shift from reactive responses to proactive measures, ensuring that Africa has the resources it needs to tackle both current and future health emergencies.
